Fiberglass Windows: An Overview

When choosing windows for your new house or replacement windows for your current house, remember that fiberglass windows are the cutting edge in window technology. They are relatively inexpensive, durable, energy efficient and easy to install. Choosing fiberglass windows for your home is smart and here’s why.

Fiberglass windows are great for the conservation-minded homeowner. Like the glass window pane itself, fiberglass window frames are made with sand – silica. Fiberglass is an inert, non-polluting material, and making it requires less energy than making PVC or aluminum. Further, sand is plentiful and renewable at a much, much higher rate than wood.

Being made with sand is not the only way in which fiberglass windows are environmentally sensitive; they are also extremely energy efficient. In fact, they have the highest R-rating of any windows and they exceed industry standards for thermal performance. Fiberglass is a natural insulator because it does not conduct heat or cold and it virtually does not expand or contract. All this means that you can save anywhere from 20% to 40% on your heating, cooling and energy costs over the life of the window when compared to windows made of other materials. Fiberglass windows also have the longest life expectancy and can be recycled, meaning they won’t be clogging up landfills.

For structural soundness, fiberglass windows are the way to go. They are eight times stronger than PVC windows, and fiberglass has four times the tensile strength of steel. This strength and durability allows fiberglass windows to be installed at great heights. The windows resist warping, rotting, cracking, bowing and shrinking. Fiberglass has almost no contraction or expansion rate, and when it does expand or contract, it does so at the same rate as the glass panes so there is rarely any glass seal failure. Further, since fiberglass is not brittle, its finishes will not crack or otherwise deteriorate.

The strength and durability of fiberglass windows means they are practically maintenance-free. They take painting very well, and almost all you have to do to maintain them is give them a regular cleaning with soap and water. As well, fiberglass windows don’t bow or soften or otherwise lose their shape under extreme climactic conditions, so they always operate smoothly.

Fiberglass windows have many other benefits. They are easy to install because the window remain, square, level and plumb during installation. They resist sound transmission because of their tight seals. Fiberglass windows are also safer than other types of windows because fiberglass has self-extinguishing properties in case of fire and does not emit toxic fumes like PVC.

Installing fiberglass windows in your home is a great idea for so many reasons. If you like being environmentally conscious when building your house and being safe and saving money while in it, then fiberglass window are the right choice for you.
