Blinds can serve a number of purposes in your house. The main reason to purchase blinds is as method of blocking or filtering the sunlight through and glass in your house, and they can be purchased for doors or for windows.
Blinds are available in many different lengths and styles. The type that you choose should depend on your purposes and your overall home décor, including the style of your windows and curtains. All styles are designed with some kind of pulley system that allows the home owner to adjust the gaps between the individual slates, and also to draw them according to your desires. Blinds are a perfect option for rooms that have furniture-especially expensive furniture- that may be damaged by direct sunlight. Types of furniture in this category are wood tables and chairs, pianos, and any kind of upholstered or other type of cloth covering. Installing blinds in rooms where this type of furniture is stored allows the homeowner to minimize the amount of sunlight when the room is not in use, and is a convenient way to let some light in when the room is in use. Many people don’t realize it, but the most popular and affordable blinds can also be some of the worst to deal with, in terms of hassle and durability. The standard pull-up Venetian blinds, for example, available to fit any budget easily at most stores, made from plastic. Ours cost about $5 each. As always, however, the price does reflect the quality. Our blinds have been murdered by our cat jumping through them, and are really kind of useless to us now. Otherwise, the blinds filled their function nicely- my recommendation would be that if you purchase this type of blind and you have a cat, do not place them over a window that has a ledge. The Venetian style can also be very difficult to clean, it generally involves a lot of soaking and scrubbing. Wood blinds are great for adding some warmth and a traditional look to a room. They tend to be more expensive than other materials, and as with wood furniture, you run the risk of fading from sunlight as well as warping if they are placed in a room that is too cold or too moist. Wood models can also be painted or stained to easily match the theme of any room or house. Vertical blinds are another option that can give a room a comfortable and unique feel. They are ideal for really wide windows or patio doors, as they tend to minimize the shade effect by their shape. Unlike the horizontal models, however, they do not roll easily back- they can take up a lot of space when they are pulled back. They are easier to clean, however, than are horizontal blinds.
