Venetian Blinds and Cleaning Them

By far, Venetian blinds are one of the most difficult aspects of your home to keep clean. The tiny spaces between each blind are dust magnets, especially with the prolonged exposure to sunlight from being hung directly in your window. In addition to regular cleanings while the blinds are left hanging in your window, consider removing the mini blinds at least once or twice a year in order to get them completely clean and free from dust. Keep in mind that although the task may be not be especially enjoyable, keeping your Venetian blinds free from dust will keep them looking newer longer, meaning the you can avoid costly replacement fees.

Just like cleaning any other part of your home, develop a cleaning schedule for your Venetian blinds. There are several options of cleaning devices specifically marketed to cleaning horizontal mini blinds, most of which have several cloth covered “fingers” that are designed to fit into the spaces between the blinds themselves. Other devices are made to fit over your vacuum cleaner hose as an attachment that literally sucks the dust off your blinds. Of course, you do not have to purchase special blind cleaning items in order to keep your Venetian blinds free from dust, but these items do make the job go by a bit easier.

It is generally easier to first position your Venetian blinds in the open position, where the space in between each blind is at its maximum point. Take each blind separately and be sure to clean both the top and the bottom of each individual blind. Be careful to avoid any sharp edges, especially if your blinds are made from aluminum rather than vinyl, as you could potentially end up with cut fingers in addition to clean blinds at the end of your task. The next step is to close your Venetian blinds and clean the blinds while they are oriented both up and down to finish the cleaning process.

Also be sure to clean the hardware brackets on your Venetian blinds in addition to the decorative header located at the top of the blinds and wand that opens and closes the blinds. By keeping your Venetian mini blinds clean and dust free, you can ensure your room remains cleaner and the air you breathe is free from aggravating dust contaminants. This is especially important for individuals with allergies or breathing issues (including asthma) that can become aggravated in a dusty environment. Typically, Venetian blinds are widely ignored when it comes to the cleaning process, so they may be the aggravating factor in your room.

At least once or twice a year, completely remove your Venetian blinds from their hardware and complete an in-depth cleaning. The removal process can be quite simple and will not do any lasting damage to either your blinds or the hardware brackets. Using simple soap and water to wash your blinds, remove any build-up caused by every day life. This is especially important for Venetian blinds that hang in kitchens, where grease and dirt can accumulate.
