When homeowners imagine the best window coverings available, they often imagine custom blinds. Attractive and durable, custom blinds are often just the thing homeowners seek to make their home décor feel complete. As fantastic as custom blinds can be for a décor, they can be a real nightmare for anyone who has to use them if they do not fit properly. Exact measurement is paramount in getting all the use and beauty out of any custom blinds in your home.
When measuring for custom blinds, you need to think about whether your blinds will be mounted inside the window frame (recessed mount) or outside the frame (outside mount). If the custom blinds you will order are vertical blinds, know that most vertical blinds are outside mount blinds because of the clearance needs for slat rotation. Vertical blinds can also be ceiling mounted. For a recessed mount, measure the exact width of the window frame from the inner most edge of the trim on one side to the inner most edge of the trim on the other. As some windows are not a perfect square, so take width measurements at the top, middle, and bottom of the window frame so that your custom blinds can be made to fit properly. Don’t be surprised if the headrail of your custom blinds is smaller than the measurements you provided. They usually are to accommodate for mounting brackets and operating clearance. Measure the height of the window frame by measuring from the inside of the top trim to the top of windowsill or whatever length you want your custom blinds to fall to. Next measure the depth of your window frame. Be careful not to include in the measurement trim, cranks or track, but only that space that is available to install mounting brackets. You may have consult the manufacturers’ guides to make sure the style of custom blinds you want is available at the depth of your window. If you are ordering custom blinds that will be mounted outside the window frame, measure the distance you want the headrail to span, making sure that there is an even length on both sides of the frame. If you will mount the blinds to the frame itself rather than wall, measure the exact width of the wood frame from the outer edge of the trim to the outer edge of the trim on the opposite side. Measure from the top of trim to whatever length you want the blinds to fall Measurements for custom blinds should always be taken with a metal tape measure for the most precision. Proper measurement will ensure that your custom blinds operate smoothly for as long as you need them to. |
